As relatives of former dairy farmers, we eat real butter. Upon marrying into this family, I learned that butter keeps quite long at room temperature, though it must be covered to protect it from flies and things dropping into it. I found a nice jar with a lid to keep the butter, but it is unusual to find it filled. Rather, it is more likely that someone gets out a stick of butter and uses it as is, leaving it on the counter to soften.
So, this morning, dh looked at a stick on the counter suspiciously. "Does this look like something licked it?" he asked, knowing that the cats and dogs have been indicted for such crimes in the past.
"Don't worry," I assured him. "It won't be wasted. I'll just mix it up in the butter dish, and you'll never know."
He had jam on his toast.

My mom's cat gets into trouble for jumping up on the counter and licking the butter. I don't know why...
I'm never using butter from that jar again.
Looks just like the butter on my kitchen counter.
That's great! I love it! You are so quick...
Surely he knows that dog saliva is cleaner than that humans.
That's gross. But, when our cat licked the butter, I'm pretty sure my mom never threw it out. We stored it in the microwave because she just had it on a plate.
For some reason, our cats rarely get on the counter. It's really peculiar to me. Every other cat I've met always gets on the counter.
Great comment on Travis' post about advertising! I have had a peculiar blogger post a message, when I checked him out it turns out he has more than a dozen blogs, all with one post or two, and all with 3 or 4 ads. You really have to watch these guys!
"Licking the butter" sound like some kind of crude euphemism to my warped mind.
That is the 3rd story I've read of late about dogs having eaten butter. Is this becoming a replacement treat for milk-bones? Knocking on wood here, I've been fortunate none of my canines or felines have ever bothered the butter.
PITAa and Barbara: likely it was the cats. Or at least, that's what the dogs are saying.
Travis! That's all I have to say: Travis!
Janie: quick wit was honed by years of put downs and quick comebacks from my job at a factory. Not something I'd recommend, though.
Kristina, we work on our cats, but at night....
Jacobi...and you eat at her house?
Debra..doesn't everyone have cat-licked butter?
Jennifer: weird about that blogger. Does he think he'll get rich? NOT.
